Behind the Scenes

Today is the day when we honor each of the administrative professionals in our lives. No matter where we work there is usually someone behind the scenes making it all run more smoothly for us. Whether it’s keeping the temperature cozy, the copier running, the wi-fi connections connecting, or making sure we get a paycheck, the rest of us in the workplace would be out of place without these professional people.

Admirable Administrators

Once known as secretaries, outside of politically correct circles, that demeaning or undermining term no longer defies or defines their abilities. There are millions of such admired administrative professionals in today’s working world. These talented men and women continue to find their careers in the sanctuaries of cubicles and offices, which too often are barely big enough for a desk, computer, phone, filing cabinet, candy jar and an iconic potted plant. Yet, upon these small, but sacred grounds, where their office and breakroom are often the same place, these admirable administrators find a way to work modern-day miracles.

Workplace Superheroes

With so much responsibility upon their shoulders, they routinely provide the back-bone and back-up to every business they serve within our community. Whether typing a memo on the computer, taking messages on the phone, faxing, filing, spread-sheeting, customer serving and trying to stay smiling; their skills with co-workers, other humans, multi-tasking and organizing are unmatched. They truly are the superheroes of the workplace. We should take a moment this week and marvel at their superpowers, which few can (or have) surpassed. Their daily heroics are both bona fide and certified.

Thank You!

Therefore, wherever you work as an admin-pro, please know that you truly make the other side of the desk, wall, or cubicle run more smoothly and effectively. Just because people don’t seem to show or say it, or who unwisely think that your paycheck is ample appreciation, please continue to do your best knowing you truly are making a difference. You give new meaning to the title, administrative professional. Today, and every day, you are very appreciated for your dedication.

A Toast to the Most

To the rest of us, let us raise our water-bottles, coffee mugs, energy drinks, file-folders, memos and Post-Its to our administrative professionals! Let us celebrate those without whose work, which may often feel like it’s behind the scenes, we would be lost, overwhelmed and underperforming in the land of schedules, voicemails, e-mails, long lines and deadlines.

Just the Fax

And remember, when work gets dark and dreary, don’t forget to keep calm and talk to the secre…I mean, the administrative professional. I’d say go give them a hug, but I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble with Human Resources or fired for such seemingly wanton workplace heresy. Finally, regardless of how we address them, it’s no secret that we need them. We appreciate them (YOU!) and I hope we will continue to do so the other 364 days of the year, also. Yes, even on holidays and the weekends because a great administrative professional is irreplaceable. Those are the fax. Thank you to each one of you!

The Seasons of Life

The seasons of life are vast and varied. Some days are full of blue skies and cool breezes, while others are dark and dreary. Of course, we know that each season is necessary to keep the circle of life refreshed and renewed. I believe it is the same within the seasons of our lives. They are meant to help prepare the soil of our souls for the seeds of new dreams and renewed vows and goals that spring brings. Yes, all of us will experience winters of worry and loss, but these seemingly seasons of treason will pass and we will prevail over the vail of sorrow and find bright joys in our tomorrows.

Chilly Challenges

I know it’s not easy to believe the sun will ever shine again when the wintery chills of your challenges seem endless, but I promise you that the sun is still there and it will shine again. The snows will melt, the rains will cease, the clouds will flee and you will see the sun again. I know you might not be able to see it now, but your season of change is coming.

Rainy Dancing

Yet, how can we hope for May flowers when we feel like we’re being drowned by April showers? This is not an easy thing to do. I’m sure you’ve heard it said that when the storms of life come, let us not stay inside complaining, but go outside and learn to dance in the rain. Easier said than done, but even if you don’t have an umbrella or a dance partner, give it a try.

Shower Power

Now, just because you’ve learned to dance in the rain, or plant flowers in faith on a cloudy day, it doesn’t mean that you’ll never face stormy seasons of doubt or distress again. But it does mean you’ll be ready to not only endure them, but to learn how to enjoy them more. And because of the things you’ve learned during your April showers, you will be more empowered to help others learn how to dance during their own storms and still plant and enjoy their own May flowers.

Reign in the Rain

Remember, there’s always a reason for the season. Some seasons are more difficult than others, but don’t commit emotional treason and stop believing in yourself. Don’t stop living the best life that you can today. No matter what difficult season you’re going through right now, it really will pass. Don’t be afraid of the storms of life. When they come, make sure you have true friends and family with warm hearts and hearths.

Hide, Seek, Find, Repeat

One of my favorite parts of Easter is hiding and hunting for eggs. It’s a true test of creativity, and ingenuity for both the hider and seeker. Whether you’re an eggs-perienced hider, hunter, finder, or the Holy Trifecta, you know the fun of finding the perfect hiding spot and the egg-citement of finding that final elusive egg. Hiding and finding all of the eggs definitely requires thinking outside the basket. Depending on who is hiding them, some eggs may be tougher to locate, but that’s part of the fun, right? And you don’t want to leave any unfound for very long, or your nose will eventually find a hidden surprise as well. And even though Easter is over, you can still have fun hiding eggs! Here’s some helpful hints for your future hiding and hunting.

Basket-Cases

There are great places outside (and inside) to hide eggs—mailboxes, trees, flower pots, car tires, and anyplace with lots of grass, weeds or shrubs. Remember, egg color and camouflage are your friends! In other words, don’t hide pink eggs in green grass. Hiding inside can also be tricky. Some favorite hiding spots include: picture frames, houseplant pots, bookshelves, upside-down cups, and under the couch—not under the couch cushions—trust me! If you’re really feeling creative, or vindictive, you can hide eggs inside shoes or cereal boxes. (You did not hear these ideas from me!) The point is to have fun. You want searchers to successfully fill their baskets not become basket-cases! Hiding also needs to account for age, experience and height of the seekers!

A Good Day to Dye

What’s the point I’m dye-ing for you to discover? Just like finding elusive Easter eggs, life is full of hidden treasures and miracles for you to find each day. Some are trickier and may take more time and effort. Some will make you reach a little higher, while others are in plain sight and within easier reach. Regardless, I’ve learned that hidden treasures and miracles are as specific and special as the person who finds them. They are never too far out of reach, or hidden so well that you never find them…as long as you’re willing to keep searching.

Creative Beauty

Even if you haven’t found a treasure in a while, don’t stop believing or searching. Your heart’s basket may feel empty now, but it will be filled! Sometimes there’s a miracle in the mailbox, or you can wipe away the treasured tears of a friend. Making someone smile, offering a helping hand, a healing hug, and a sure shoulder to lean on are the true treasures in life. We don’t even have to hide them. And just as Easter eggs are beautifully and creatively colored, we each have our own special beauty and colors to share with the world.

Treasure Sharing

At this time of renewal and rebirth, let your heart and soul discover new life. Don’t stop searching until you find those hidden treasures waiting just for you. And don’t stop believing in miracles, even when you do find a rotten egg now and again. While you’re searching, remember to share the treasures in your basket with those who need to be uplifted, supported, encouraged, comforted and reminded that life itself is a miracle to be treasured every day. Happy Easter!

One Last Hug

It was on a Saturday (February 3, 2021), that I lost a special light in my life. My grandma Carole traded in this rutty earth life for one with more eternal and peaceful significance. It was only a couple of days before she left that we were sitting at her kitchen table talking about life, love, watching cooking videos, and enjoying the moments of silence in-between. Little did I know it would be our last conversation on this earth. I will never forget our final hug.

One Last Goodbye

My next memory is of being by her side in the hospital. She wasn’t aware of where she was as the medicine marred her mindfulness. Then came the haunting words; the harrowing and heart-breaking moment when someone tells you, “It’s time to say your goodbyes.” I did the best I could to do so, but now it was my mindfulness was marred. Thankfully, though with heavy heart and tears, I was able to spend the night (along with other family members) by her bedside in Room #104.

One Last Dream

The next 18 hours seemed like a blur, but also blessing for all of us. She slept peacefully and pain-free, most of the time. While watching her sleep, even if only for a few moments here and there, I seemed to forgot she was leaving us. It was as if she would wake up any moment and walk out the front door with us. Yet, even with a peaceful feeling of watching her sleep away her final dreams in mortality, it was difficult knowing that one of those exhausted exhales would be her last.

Blueprints of Love

We had a beautiful bond; a unique bridge it seems only Grandmas have the blueprints to build. On this bridge, we were able to share many adventures together. These are the precious memories that will help comfort me as I continue my mortal journey without her. I hope others she shared her time, talents, and treasures with will also be comforted by their memories.

A New Adventure

And now my G-ma is off on a new, greater adventure; a new chapter in the continuing story of life beyond far the concerns and cares of this one. Though, I do hope she’s still able to sneak away sometimes to visit and share a glimpse of her new adventures with me! And I don’t know if they deliver the Iron County Today newspaper in Heaven, but just in case, “I love you G-ma!”

Angel On Loan

From each of Carole’s family, friends and the countless lives that her love and light touched, WE love you Grandma, Mom, Sister, Friend and Angel On Loan! To each of the hospital angels that accompanied Carole on her last night on earth, Thank you. You know who you are. There were too many names to remember but each one wrote their signature of love on her heart’s final pages of a life well lived.

A Great Soul

Someone once shared, “A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” Thank you G-ma for your life and for bringing and keeping us all together. Each of us and this world are better forever because you lived and loved. While your light no longer shines in Room #104, it still shines brightly in my heart and in the hearts of all who knew you and were blessed to know you. May your light continue to bless and guide us until we meet again.

Days Remaining?

What if you were told today that you were going to die? Not from natural causes, but from an illness, or disease such as cancer. What if a doctor placed an estimated number on the remaining days of your life? Even with a generous estimate, no amount of days are ever enough when giving cush bad news.

All Is NOT Lost!

My heart aches for each person and family who feels torn apart by cancer and any other tragedy, especially those that have already, or will “sooner than later” end in loss of life. My heart aches for those who are ambushed by such bad news and then feel all is lost and that the rest of their lives will be filled only with living with the regrets of days wasted and both days and dreams ahead that will surely go unfulfilled. I wish I had the words to comfort and inspire anyone suffering through any disease or disability in their lives, as to help them not give up, and to have the courage to live every day and appreciate every breath; to have hope that as long as one more breath remains, you will use it to live and to love to the best of your ability, no matter what.

Courageous Carole

Then, there was the life of my dear grandmother, Carole. She was told that her liver was failing and that her earthly life would soon end. Thankfully, through a loving liver donor and skilled doctors, a life-saving transplant was completed. And thanks to family and many community members who helped fund her miracle with donations and prayers, my grandmother lived 27 more precious years. Next week I’ll include the special memorial I wrote for her when she passed away in 2021. And she not only survived 27 years, but thrived as she created countless loving memories and changed the lives of all that have enjoyed her life and love. I cannot imagine all the adventures, counsel, love and joy that would have been lost during those 27 years.

Precious Present

As you wipe your eyes, and I wipe mine, I want to ask you another question. What if you knew you had 27 years left to live? Would they be as precious to you? How would you choose to live them? Who would you want to share them with? Whether its 27 years or 27 days, whether you have a life threatening disease or not, please don’t let one more precious day be wasted. Don’t let doubt and fear steal any more of your days. Even if there is a number placed on your days remaining, make them count. It’s not easy. I won’t pretend to know how difficult it is, but cure or no cure, please keep fighting. Your family and friends may get frustrated, but they need you and love you. Live your life to the very end!

Internal Real Estate

Mortgages help people not only secure a home but to also obtain the means to improve that home and its potential property value. What about your intellectual, emotional, and spiritual property values? Just as you take care of your physical home, your internal real-estate also needs improving and maintaining. Both will provide dividends of joy and happiness if you are willing to make the necessary investments of your time and energy towards their protection and improvement.

Compare and Despair

You can also mortgage your intellectual property value by comparing your achievements or circumstances with another’s. When you compare, you often despair. Then, in a desperate attempt to keep up with the Joneses, you can become jaded and blinded to your own blessings. Don’t get stuck in the mire of admiring the seemingly greener grass on the “other side.” When you start looking at life as a competition everything on the other side is going to seem greener, more successful, bigger and more beautiful. Stop fussing and start focusing on appreciating and maintaining the good things already on your side. Worrying about the other side can mortgage your valuable time and energy that you could be using to make your side greener, healthier and happier.

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Alright, sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side. Maybe it’s just as dry and dead as your side. Maybe the weeds next door have now also become your unwelcomed weeds. Perhaps you’ve never had a good example of a happy, healthy, successful life. Maybe you’ve never walked barefoot through the green grass of joy and peace. Maybe all you’ve ever known (physically and emotionally) are weeds and dirt. You’re so used to recognizing the wreckage in your life that you believe that’s all there can and ever will be. And in such despair and apparent disrepair, you can’t see how a life so lost and full of destruction could ever be regrown, repaired, let alone rebuilt from the ruins of your decisions, or the effects of the decisions and derision of others. That doesn’t mean you need to mortgage your hopes and dreams, or let fear foreclose on your future and cause your intellectual property values to plummet.

Shack or Castle?

You can begin to achieve true prosperity by taking back ownership of your intellectual, emotional, and spiritual properties. Take down the For Rent or For Sale signs and transform your shack of shame into a confident castle of character. Stop mortgaging your mind to mediocrity. Get rid of weeds, pests, and guests that are not helping improve your property values. It may be difficult and uncomfortable, but you’ve got to leave some things behind to make room for better things in life. Release anything that will ultimately matter the least and has and will continue to only offer temporary reprieve and anything which will deceive you into selling your dreams for distractions and return only regrets for such poor investments. Today, give yourself permission to re-invest in your happiness and health!

NO TRESPASSING! KEEP OUT! DO NOT ENTER!

These warning signs can be found almost anywhere. They convey that what lies beyond them is not yours and you’re not welcome to be there. They are most often found on fences and gates signifying that a certain property, possession, or place is off limits to anyone without permission to pass through. Those who disobey such signs are usually up to no good. They want to poach another’s precious livestock or ruin their ranches. Poachers don’t care about signs, gates, or fences.

Personal Poachers

You may have some personal poachers in your life trying to sneak onto the precious lands of your heart and mind attempting to poach your peace, purity, integrity, and your character. They want to put your families, friendships, and relationships at risk, or ruin them altogether. You’ve got to be more vigilant against such vigilantes and vandalizers of your values and virtues.

Catch .22

While warning signs are a good precaution at preventing poachers (as are bullets), one concern with putting up too many NO TRESPASSING signs is that you can also deter and keep the good things out too. That tough look on your face and/or your wardrobe choices, may be a warning for the wrong people not to mess with you, but it may also send the wrong signal and keep the right people from recognizing and enjoying your great personality and caring heart behind your intimidating signs. Over time, without letting enough good influences into your heart and life, you may also become blinded to, or forget, the amazing person that you are. You may even stop investing in yourself because your good qualities and talents which may have been poached by people and places that didn’t and don’t have your best interests at heart.

Trespassed Trust

Nevertheless, I’m not saying you should take all the signs down. You’ve got to protect yourself, right? Maybe you’ve already had too many trespassers, poachers and vandalizers in your life. Maybe you’ve had your unfair share of uncaring poachers that ruined your lands of hopes and dreams and stole precious things from you. Maybe NO TRESPASSING signs are the only signs you can trust right now to help keep you safe?

Inventory and Removal

My counsel, coaching and encouragement, is to do an honest inventory of your emotional, spiritual, and physical properties. Begin exploring every acre of your heart, mind, and life, to see if there is anything, or anyone, that is unhealthy, discouraging, or depressing hiding out. Be on the lookout for habits and habitats that have gone from just trespassing to becoming completely entrenched within your life. If there is anything like that, remove it from your property as soon as possible. Don’t wait until later, or when you have time. Make the time right now.

KEEP OUT vs. WELCOME

Your life is a precious land designated for peace, happiness, protection and enjoyment with those you choose to share it with. It’s okay to replace some KEEP OUT signs with WELCOME signs. You will learn who the poachers are and how to get rid of them. Today it’s time to courageously and confidently face them, and if necessary, get the appropriate help to get rid of them. I know it’s not easy, convenient or comfortable. However, please don’t let any more poachers steal or keep you from the healing, happy places and people in your life. Today, it’s time to reclaim your life and become your best self, no matter what!

Winter Wonderland

With winter’s wonderland still weighing upon us, “Chill Out” may seem like a fitting phrase for the still to be frozen. Famed forecaster Jack Frost is proudly predicting more icy weather and Nurse Nature’s yearly chill-pill is always a tough one to swallow; even with a cup of hot chocolate waiting to warm us. Sniffling and shivering shovelers will attempt to clear safe paths through the white wasteland. Daring drivers will attempt to traverse the snow and ice covered roads, where one slip up can quickly lead to a pile up. For snowflakes and no brakes do not a safe trip make.

Winter Warfare

Winter can also be especially difficult for Sunbirds who have been living in a climate with no snow and do not know snow’s deceiving dangers. However, we can all learn to weather the weather whether we’re shoveling or driving. Yes, wearing a warmer wardrobe and having the right equipment is crucial, but knowing when and how to use it is equally important as we wage our winter warfare more wisely. Are your handwarmers charged up? How are the antifreeze levels in your vehicle? Are your warm, socks clean? Are there holes in your snow boots? How about the condition of your snow shovel? There are things best attended to before the first flake falls!

Winter Wisdom

While it’s important to be able to trust our gloves, sweaters, heaters and vehicles, we must also learn to trust our own inner-winter wisdom, too. Because even though our wardrobes and vehicles are winter worthy, sometimes we still have to go slower than the speed limit to stay safer. Even for those who tempt their fate with technology on the sunniest of days, I hope they will still wait until they get to their desired destination first, before reading and responding to that tempting text message, sweet tweet, or answer that “life or death” phone call. Because that’s just what it might end up being, especially when the roads are extra unsafe during wintery weather!

Winter Woes

There is another type of wintery forecast we will experience in our lives; one more personal and often less predictable and able to prepare appropriately enough for. Though there are summer and spring seasons of life, where the sun is shining, there are no rain clouds and life is beautiful; there are also seasons where emotional winters weigh heavily upon our hearts and minds. During these times, our feelings feel frozen and we’re tired of our tires spinning in vain. We may doubt whether the sun of happiness will shine again upon our seemingly frozen minds and hearts.

Winter Winners

During such discouraging, even depressing weather, we must trust our inner-winner to endure our personal winters and find a way to spring back into action. It’s not easy and we shouldn’t try to go it alone. Nevertheless, in such times and weather, we should avoid slippery places and icy people. We must stay closer to those kin whose kilns will keep us safe and warm. Seek out those people in their spring and summer seasons and let their sunshine help melt our icy paths and warm-up and soften our hearts. May we also learn to slow down and take more time with who and what matters most. If all else fails, chill out and remember the sun will shine again and melt the messes. Spring will bring new blooms of hopes and dreams to replace those that have been long frozen by the gloom of the snowstorms of your past and present.

The Wise Man and the Foolish Man

There is familiar story and song about a wise man and a foolish man, who both wanted to build a house for themselves. The wise man builds his house upon a rock, while the foolish man chooses to build his house upon the sand. Was it really easier/quicker to build his house on the sand? Regardless of their architectural and construction backgrounds, and desire to be as efficient as possible with materials and labor, the potentially destructive storms struck both houses. However, only one house was still standing after “the rains came down and the floods came up.” You can guess which house it was. While I’m sure the wise man still had some repairs to make, I’m sure they were mostly minor (compared to the one built on the shifting sands) because he made sure his foundation was more secure from the beginning.

Wisdom From the Storms

Wherever your real estate resides, you can learn life lessons from this stormy story. Whether you live life wisely or foolishly, you will still experience storms. While I believe where you build is as important as how you build, sometimes, through no fault of your own, the storms will still seem to win. Afterwards, the aftermath, clean-up, and rebuilding phases can be daunting and seem impossible. Therefore, the first thing to do after a storm—also, before and during a storm—is to not give up. Whatever storms you face, and whether they damaged your home, your heart, or someone else’s heart, never give up hope that you can repair and/or rebuild. For where there is life, there is hope. And where there is hope bridges can be rebuilt, foundations can be repaired and relationships can be restored.

Ruined by the Ruins

However, even with hope, the remaining rubble and ruins can seem overwhelming. It may seem impossible to remove all the rubble, let alone rebuild. Nevertheless, you’ve got to remove it before you can begin rebuilding. It’s not wise to build or rebuild upon unsteady foundations created by past floods, or failures. This is why you need all the help you can get. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find good people you trust to not only remind you that rebuilding is possible, but who are also willing to help you rebuild a life of beauty from the ashes of your storms.

Rebuild, Reinforce, Relocate

Whether you are rebuilding or redecorating, the lessons learned from previous storms can help you redesign, rebuild, and reinforce your resiliency for future storms. Even if you must relocate from a storm prone environment, or unstable, sandy-foundation relationships, look for people and places with rock-solid characters and commitment to help you become a better person despite the storms and damages of your past.

Share Your Shelter

Then, after surviving and recovering from your own personal storms, you will be able to recognize and more steadily and readily reach out to others who are enduring their own tumultuous storms. You can be their safe shelter, steady rudder and winds of hope as they sail through a sea of rubble and despair.

Strength From the Storm

It’s been said that there are some things you can only learn in a storm. While there are challenges and heartaches that only the “storms of life” can bring, there will also come new strengths and perspectives that not many other life experiences can provide. This new strength, perspective, and even greater appreciation for your life, will not only help you better weather future storms, but even allow you to become a lighthouse, or a rescue ship, during someone else’s storm.

Shelter From the Storm

Also, not all storms are hurricanes, or tornadoes. They may have similar funnels of frustration, but if you know where to go to find shelter, the danger and damage can still be minimized. Whether it’s a daily storm that’s work related, or a personal family storm, it’s important to take time to rest and recover. Do you have a place in your home where you can go to relax and recharge after, or during your enduring of daily storms? Is there a place where you can find, or create your own calmer weather? If not, it is possible to create a safe shelter. How? What can you do to be more prepared when you feel a storm brewing? How can you endure and survive a storm that has already blown into your life? The answers may be closer to home than you think.

Technological Turbulence

Creating a refuge of relaxation and rejuvenation from the storms of life is crucial to reducing a storm’s severity, or at least its impact and also improving your survival rate. The best place to create a refuge from life’s storm begins in your heart. However, sometimes, your heart may be the cause of your own storms. This happens when the people, places and things you allow, or invite into your mind, heart and home bring the storms with them.

A Stormy Inventory

You can improve your storm-preventing, storm-enduring and storm-healing capabilities—almost immediately—by taking a personal inventory. Inventory what you watch on television, the music you listen to, video games you play, books and magazines you read, where you allow your phone and the Internet to take you and the people and places you hang around. If they are causing turbulence, it’s time to seek refuge elsewhere.

When the Storms Win

Ultimately, no matter how well you are prepared, untimely storms will still arise in your life. There will be times when it feels like the storms win; where you’ve done all you can, but the floodwaters still find their way in. Don’t blame, belittle or beat yourself up. I also don’t want you to minimize the suffering, damage caused by any storm—physical and/or emotional. I want to emphasize now and next week the need to regroup, repair, rebuild and reinforce your life after every storm.

Groundhog Day Gales

While typically Hurricane season runs from June thru November—September being the worst—some tropical storms have disregarded their seasonal swirling and swaggering and caused havoc as early as February. However, no matter when the stormy seasons are predicted, for those people living in hurricane-prone areas, they are already dreading, preparing, and praying, for the safety of their families, homes, and cities. Because over decades of devastation, hurricanes—and their wrecking relatives, tornados—have displaced and destroyed many homes and lives.

The Safety of Distance

While many across the country don’t need to worry as much about such destructive tropical storms, the storms of life can strike anywhere, anytime. They seemingly come out of nowhere; unannounced and unavoidable—fast and fierce. Thankfully, most physical storms can be predicted, or at least discovered in enough time to warn people to prepare and/or evacuate. However, spiritual, emotional or mental hurricanes cannot always be predicted, or prepared for as adequately.

A Variety of Tempests

They can come in the form of an illness, injury, loss, or even the untimely death of a loved one. These emotional storms can be as destructive, even more so, than physical hurricanes. Sadly, the damage from emotional, mental, or spiritual storms can often go unnoticed, untreated, or can feel like it’s unrepairable. In today’s world, the need for storm-healers outweighs the need for storm-chasers. There are too many who don’t know where to find refuge from their storms.

Evaluation and Evacuation

No matter the nature of the storms in our lives, they can be as deceptive as they are destructive. Their potential pathways of peril cannot (as often as we’d like) be predicted with much, if any, certainty. That’s why people in hurricane danger prone areas are cautioned to evacuate as early as possible, as a life-saving precaution. But how do you evacuate from an emotional storm? Unfortunately, some survivors turn to drugs, alcohol, abuse, or pornography, as escapes. These are only temporary shelters; unable to fully withstand the high winds and damaging debris from their storms. They are counterfeit comforts that can only provide a temporary and false sense of safety; a façade that they have evaded, or escaped the storm altogether.

The Lie of the Storm

Using (and abusing) these counterfeit comforts is where they can become trapped in and deceived by the eye of the storm. Like the eye of a hurricane, the weather inside seems less chaotic. The winds are not as powerful, and the weather can appear calmer. However, they will soon realize their demise of falling into such dangerous deceptions. They will not only discover that the storm is still there waiting for them when they return, but that it is fiercer than ever. In fact, they’ll realize that when they turn to worldly addictions to help them endure their afflictions, they are cast into storms even more powerful and destructive than a hurricane.

Weather or Not…

No, we cannot avoid every storm—they are a part of every season of our lives—but we can learn from them as to help us prepare for future tempests. And while some storms also cause delays and damages, we don’t have to let them completely destroy our hearts, homes, or our integrity. Next week I’ll share some ideas on how to remain grounded even when we’re being pounded by the storms of life. In the meantime, may we each learn more about how to weather the challenging weather of life, together.

An Out of This World Teacher

Last week I spoke about the terrible tragedy of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986. Prior to their training/launch, NASA was accepting applications for non-astronauts to be able to ride the shuttle into space. People from all walks of life applied. They came from every corner and career in the world—Journalists, Poets, Musicians, Artists; yet, they chose a teacher—the one they felt would not only be able to describe the indescribable experience best, but then teach it to others and inspire them with hope and courage to wake-up, get-up and achieve their own out-of-this-world dreams.

Launching Your Life

Isn’t that a great goal for each of our lives, no matter our career, education, or location? Each day we launch into a new day hoping for a safe and successful flight. With each successful flight and fight in our lives we build our confidence for future Endeavors. We each need the confidence of not only, “I know what I’m doing here,” but more importantly, “I belong here!” Also, we must be careful not to let our victories turn confidence into arrogance. That’s when we fail and fall.

Catastrophic Catalysts

However, even our catastrophes can become catalysts to improve our character and courage. Nevertheless, when you know there’s a problem with something or someone, and nothing is being done, or what’s being done is being done blindly with the excuse, “This is the way we’ve always done it,” then it is your absolute duty, despite displeasure, disbelief and damage, to say something and stand up for what’s right. If there’s a problem, you investigate it, figure it out and solve it. If you know a problem is persisting, it will only get worse when left unchecked, even for another day or wait for the weekend. Find a way to fix it now. Waiting makes things worse because it makes challenges harder to fix as more challenges will crop up in the meantime—adding more stress to the struggle.

The Best Laid Plans

Through your daily choices, you will see green flags (good) and red flags (bad). Any red flags may mean you’re not ready to launch just yet. If your life feels like it’s headed towards badness more than goodness, it would better to not launch (proceed, participate, partake) and wait for better weather. It doesn’t mean you hide inside, but rather that you take more time to reexamine, readjust and repair your plans. Who cares about schedule and deadlines? If you don’t solve the problem it may be the end of the line. Don’t worry about if it takes longer than normal to assess and repair, or if the public is excited about a certain event and date and that they’ll be sad if you have to wait/postpone/cancel; stop the process! Look, Listen, and don’t Launch.

Historically speaking, which would have been worse—delaying the launch and disappointing the gratification of millions of people who changed their schedules to see a once-in-a-lifetime event, or allowing the launch when it was known that crucial repairs were needed, having those repairs cause an accident and causing the dismay and despair of millions of people who now are changing their schedules to see a funeral?

The Risk of Rushing

And don’t use the excuse that you don’t have time to fix things. Make the time. Because when you rush things, you neglect, overlook, miss and even ignore potential problems. You may justify them as being part of the risk, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing all you can to make sure you minimize the potential risks.

Created for creation and exploration

With each new bold step into the unknown comes unknown, known and accepted risks and dangers. Even responsible risk-taking can bring danger and death; though some rewards are worth the risks of such tragedies. Yet, how many tragedies could be avoided with more patience and preparation not just determination?

The Challenger Challenge

I remember such a transforming tragedy from my youth. One day in school, my 5^th grade teacher wheeled a TV into our classroom to show us the news about the disastrous loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger and it’s crew. It was to be an amazing and inspiring flight with America’s first schoolteacher in outer space, Christa McAuliffe. I never forgot that marring moment.

Failure to Launch

Looking back now, I not only understand how that tragedy could have been prevented, but also how precious each day of my life is now—no matter how prepared I (we) feel. Sometimes we postpone or fail to launch because we feel unprepared or are paralyzed by fear. As we remember how valuable each day is, it will help us keep pressing and living forward.

The Value of One Day

This seems somewhat insignificant because who am I to decide how valuable a day is? Actually, who am I (we) not to decide? We can each choose to waste or postpone our potential at any moment. Do we really have the arrogance to think that our complacency will not be rewarded with regret because we still have “tomorrow?” How dare we be presume to assume even one day can be wasted. Each moment is precious.

Determination is Not Enough

Also, we can dream about a fulfilling future, but without patience, preparation and perseverance, our determination will not be enough. Because we won’t be strong or wise enough to sustain and maintain the things we gain upon reaching our desired destinations. It’s also important you know who you’re traveling with and that you’re both headed in the same direction and to the best place so the trials ahead with be worth enduring when life’s journey gets difficult.

A Modern-Day Pioneer

Like the pioneers who trekked across the plains in covered wagons, or pioneers who crossed the heavens in a space shuttle; you may be the first in your family, even the world, to do what you’re doing, or going to do. Be brave, trust your training, your heart and don’t be afraid to be the last or the first to reach your dreams! Do your best every day, no matter the weather.

Endurance and Elevation

Nevertheless, even when we must endure storms and darkness, with no end or light in sight, we need to find something and someone to hope in; to make us smile and bring us happiness—even if only for a moment. Because each day, even when we’re headed the right way, we modern-day pioneers need all the extra motivation and elation to give us all the elevation we can get.

Godspeed my fellow pioneers.

Dreams don’t die on their own.

Your belief in them must die first. Thus, you must nourish what you want to flourish. This goes for both good and evil. Don’t be afraid to have a dream, but if you want it to come true, you’ve got to wake up, get up and not give up. Without real passion there will be no true progression. Your faith and your efforts will become languished and extinguished long before your dreams do. But your dreams are not destined to be shipwrecked on a lonely, deserted island, or exiled to some dark corner of the world. You are the architect of your future. Today you will break off the manacles of mediocrity and the shackles of chauvinism.

Don’t Stop Dreaming

I know there are dreamers who have lost their dreams, or their dreams have been replaced by nightmares. Even now, there are many lost in the valleys of hopelessness and loneliness. I still have a dream that you will know that there is hope and there is help. I still have a dream that by bringing your dreams to life they will inspire and ignite new life to other people’s doused dreams. I still have a dream that your courage can be the light in their darkness and your love can be the first sounds of joy they hear when they finally hear freedom ring.

You Are A Bright Beacon of Hope

Therefore, 2026 is not your end, but your new beginning! I know you have dreams that need new belief and new life. Dream your dreams but remember it’s not enough to just dream. It’s what you do with them that counts. I join my hands and heart with each of you as we dream new dreams, sing new songs and give new meanings to our lives! Then, each of us must stand as bright beacons to all others seeking a better life and become the standard bearers of the flames of courage and freedom.

You Will Not March Alone

Let us rise up against everything that threatens our peace and tries to break our lives into pieces. We cannot turn back! As we march forward we will not walk alone. If one of us struggles through great trials and tribulations, then we will all struggle together until we can all stand up together. We will all be united until we are all free at last! We shall not succumb to the slums of condemnation. We shall withstand every storm of prosecution. Because our hearts are rooted so deeply within the soil of our souls, that even though the difficulties of today and tomorrow may bend our branches; though our minds and bodies be heavy with fatigue as we fight the tranquilizing temptations of this world; we shall become veterans of virtuous living and our day of deliverance will come like a mighty river bringing life and light to our dreams, our homes, our cities, our states and our whole world.

Never forget that one person can change the world. Now is the time to have a dream and to make a difference. This year, even today, may that person be you!

Do you have a dream?

This week’s rut is a tribute inspired by the great examples of spirit and courage portrayed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I have woven some of his wise words with my own and it is my hope that we will remember that we are each a part of the same great family and on the same journey through life. May we truly be a friend and a light to all who need one—for we all need one.

A dream worth living for

Have you ever believed in someone or something so much that you were willing to do anything to help bring it to life? To build it and to protect it? In your daily pursuit of happiness have you found something so exhilarating and beautiful that you would give all that you have just to be a part of it and then share it with the world? If you have, then you have found a dream worth living for. This discovery is one of the great treasures of mortality, but also the most difficult. It will require all that you have, but it will also grant unto you some of the most fulfilling feelings of your life. I enthusiastically encourage you to never let go of such a dream and to do all that you can to follow the path and plan that will bring it to life. As you put your heart and life into pursuing your passions they shall surely give life unto you and unto others.

Dream Doubters

When you have the courage to dream, sooner or later you’ll run into those who don’t believe in your dream, who say it’s a waste of time and money. Maybe they have lost the belief in their own dreams of ever coming true. Perhaps they have abandoned their own dreams in the dark and desolate valleys of doubt, or let their dreams drown in the depths of disbelief and despair while they drank deeply from the cup of distraction and procrastination. Pay them no heed when they criticize your creed. Those who can only judge you by the colors of your past, more than by the current content of your character, shall never escape their own emotional exile. Nor shall they get out of their own beguiling ghettos, or away from their personal guillotine of gloom and doom, and will wander and wallow alone in the valley of their own withering despair.

Busyness as usual

Finally, whether criticized or condemned, some of you may have decided to default on your dreams. I’m here to remind you that the Bank of Opportunity is not bankrupt. There are still sufficient funds available for your future. Destiny’s debts can still be paid if you will stop letting worry and apathy make so many withdrawals. From now on, your life will no longer be business or busyness as usual. Wherever you stashed, stuck or stowed your dreams, it’s time to go and get them back. Dig them out of the quicksand and swamps of procrastination and wash them clean in the overflowing oasis of hope.

New Year, Old You?

Are you happy with your decisions and accomplishments of 2025? Do you believe that 2026 will not only be different, but better? Here’s a little secret…you don’t have to wait until 11:59 PM on December 31^st, 2026, to find out if you’ve really made any past progress, or 12:00 AM on January 1^st, 2027, to see if new opportunities await you.

Change Begins Now…Every Day

You can begin changing your yearly results by the daily choices you make and the paths you take starting now. Some of you may have started the new year stuck in the same old ruts of 2025. Maybe some of you woke up to the same old rotten routines and think the only thing different was the day on the calendar. I understand.

Yes, you should strive to have a positive perspective.

But sometimes even the positive things that try to lift you up can be more annoying than the negative things that you have insulted and insulated yourself with to avoid having to change them. I also understand that some days it seems like nothing can get you excited about your life. No motivating mantras or invigorating intentions can help you look positively enough towards the seemingly long months and depressing doldrums ahead.

Is it easier to believe that you’re a failure?

Or is it easier to believe that you aren’t good enough to live a happier life than it is to embrace the reigns of responsibility to make happiness happen? Perhaps counterfeit comforts have blinded you to that responsibility and choice to stop complaining and to instead start draining the swamps and mires of a mediocre life—no matter what obstacles are currently in your path. You are not a failure!

There is no magical potion positive people possess.

Their grass isn’t greener because it’s better grass but because they water it more often and give it more direct sunlight. They change their perspective which gives them a better directive. Then their determination helps get them to their destinations despite the detours and defeats of life. Sure, it all sounds rosy and even unrealistic, but is it really worse than the opposite of believing you can have a better life through better thoughts, better choices and better actions?

The Grand Canyon wasn’t carved in a day, or even a year, right?

It was continually carved each day by the steadiness of the sculpting stream which eventually transformed it into the magnificent masterpiece it is today. Your everyday choices are like that Colorado River. You may have moments where you get frustrated and detoured from carving out your future, but if you will keep going and flowing, eventually you will achieve whatever you are trying to accomplish. Daily progress will keep you motivated and excited about where you are and where you’re heading.

Each day (not just year) is a new beginning.

It is also a continuation of your past progress and failures which, together, will help you carve more carefully as you navigate your way through, not just around, the canyons and ruts of 2026. May you never stop flowing and keep forging ahead into a more beautiful and grander life!

They say that M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hands.

Well, that depends on how quickly you consume them, right? While they may not have time to melt in your hands, they will definitely melt if left in a hot car. My candy-coated counsel to you is that when you have something good in your life, enjoy it. Don’t wait until it melts away in the heat of indifference or ignorance. Don’t wait until birthdays, holidays, or special occasions, to make special memories and to tell and show someone, including yourself, how much they mean to you.

just because someone says, “Betcha can’t eat just one,” doesn’t mean you need to prove them wrong and eat the whole bag of chips.

It’s like making mistakes. We’ve all made them and we’re going to make more. Though, hopefully not too many more. Sometimes, once is enough. You live and you learn. That’s the key to a happy life; learning from your mistakes. And the mistakes of your parents don’t have to be yours. You can still be a chip off the old block, even if sometimes you need to break the mold and re-sculpt the patterns of the past to live and to leave a better legacy for your children.

Ultimately, no matter how good a parent or child you are, you can’t always have it your way.

No matter how careful you are, you will still get in trouble for squeezing the Charmin. However, there are times when you may need to share the Charmin with someone whose tears need a friend. This reminds me of the reach out and touch someone commercials from AT&T. You may not think you can make a difference in someone’s life, but you can, just by being yourself and reaching out. If you’re the one who needs someone to reach out and remind you that you’re a good person, and are worth loving and waiting for, reach out to me and tell me about it. I’ll remind you.

Finally, like a good neighbor, you should strive to do the best you can to make a difference for others while also seeking happiness for yourself.

And while Coke will tell you that you can open happiness, I believe happiness must first be created within, then opened and poured out amongst family, friends and anyone else who needs a reminder that there is more joy to life than constantly relying on the relief from a plop, plop, fizz, fizz.

And just because America runs to Dunkin, doesn’t mean America runs on Dunkin.

No offense, but America is better than that. We run on freedom, family and faith. The proof is found in the at least twenty military mottos and the over a million brave men and women who defend each one of them, and each of us, every day.

So, as 2026 arrives, no matter what your slogan, catchphrase, tagline, mantra, or motto is in life that describe and inspire you, that move and motivate you, sometimes you just need to ignore the store and focus more on living your life to the greatest of your ability, no matter what.

Tempting Taglines

Do you know what’s in your wallet? Are you sure you’ve got milk? Tempting taglines and inspiring slogans surround us every day. They constantly attempt to catch our attention each time we use the Internet, phones, televisions, computers, tablets, or drive down the freeway. Therefore, while you’re eating your breakfast of champions, I’d like to share a few things I’ve learned over the years from some familiar and famous phrases from ads that will hopefully add some more joy and purpose to your life.

Messages in the Messes

As you live your daily life, even with the best of intentions, you will still spill things, break things and make mistakes. You’ll make a bounty of messes that require a quicker picker upper to avoid disastrous damage. You know, those messes that a puny paper towel can’t handle as well as a brawny one. And where taking out the trash is concerned, if your trash bags are not hefty enough, you may need a bulldozer and a dump truck. That’s alright, remember to never give up and never surrender!

That Was Easy

Life isn’t just about making and mending messes. You will also have your that was easy moments and sometimes, even when you realize that when it rains, it pours, you’ll learn to still dance in the rain. And on those extra gloomy days, you will need to learn to get up and just do it, even when you’re not lovin’ it.

You’re Worth IT Already

Mistakes, messes and monsoons may also cause you to wonder, is it in you? Or if you’re worth it. Maybe you don’t know what “it” is. I’ll tell you what I think “it” is not. L’Oréal’s make-up motto, “Because you’re worth it,” has helped to make and sell a lot of makeup. May I be so bold as to say that you don’t need makeup to define you or remind you that you are worth it and beautiful. Another famous fallacy from Maybelline says, “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.” I say there’s no maybes about it. You are amazing because YOU are YOU. Your beauty is defined by who you are, not the facades you flaunt. If you’re not happy with who you are inside, no amount of makeup will mask it. So, the next time you apply your foundation, fix your hair and choose your daily wardrobe, remember that the very best parts about you are your heart, mind and a confident smile. And even if others can’t see your true beauty and value, you don’t need their approval to have beauty that speaks volumes.

Don’t Leave Home Without It

Furthermore, while American Express advises you, Don’t leave home without it, there are more important things you shouldn’t leave home without, like love. Speaking of which, Mastercard’s motto says, “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s Mastercard.” Love is one of those things money cannot buy. One also doesn’t need to go into debt to create worthwhile, lasting memories in life, especially for and with loved ones. More often than not, precious and priceless memories come with nothing more than the price of choosing to schedule time to be together and then following through. This is how you create a happy life and a happy home. Sorry Disney, but the heart and the home should be the happiest places on earth.

Finally, there are people in the world, yourself included, who want to feel cared about, not just noticed. We want to be appreciated not just approved of. So, as the new year approaches, may we each watch for such opportunities to care about others AND about ourselves, too. And when you care enough to send the very best, you don’t need to go to Hallmark, just follow your heart.

A date which will live in infamy.

Thursday, December 7, 2025, marked the 84^th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941). “A date which will live in infamy,” said President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Who, on December 8th, signed a Declaration of War against Japan. What ensued would be a brave, bloody and hard-fought battle. It was a terrible war that would end as it began, with falling bombs. Only this time with even more death and destruction.

Deafening destruction defined a generation

Though Japan’s surprise attack decimated America’s naval fleet, it was through that destruction that would define a generation of heroes (on both sides). Brave men and women would rise above and beyond to defend our liberty, both past, present and future, at all costs.

Personal days of infamy

We have all experienced days of personal infamy. Days when we didn’t see an enemy coming, when we felt “suddenly and deliberately attacked.” We’ve endured days we wish we could take back, opportunities we wish we had prepared better for, words left unspoken (or shouldn’t have been spoken), and actions never taken. Days of infamy that include too many moments we wish didn’t still haunt or hurt us.

A triumphant trinity

And like you, America, at great costs, has also overcome many such moments. Not because it’s better than other countries, but because when a country and people are built upon a foundation of Faith, Hope and Love, they can survive, thrive and overcome anything. Those three weapons of peace, when infused and used together, form a greater power than all the weapons of war ever produced. That triumphant trinity can heal all wounds, turn enemies into allies, rebuild countries and inspire the very hearts beating within each of us.

Is it harder to love than to hate?

Can we start focusing more on improving our affections, rather than inventing new afflictions that bully, belittle, discredit and ultimately destroy each other? No, I’m not talking about regular ruts. I’m talking about grand canyons of contention that need to stop being filled with anger and regrets and filled in and fortified with love.

Love will lead the way.

“Love is all you need,” said the Beatles. They were right. Love heals wounds, builds and rebuilds bridges over troubled waters that once seemed impossible for even such a miracle to be attempted. Love is a power that can connect people and hearts in the next room, next door, or thousands of miles away. Yet, hate and war can destroy hearts and homes from across the dinner table, a bedroom, or a neighborhood. Sadly, home is often the worst battleground of all.

Humility not humiliation.

Let us be more patient, more understanding, and more forgiving. Where lines and swords have been drawn, or bombs dropped in anger, let us surrender in humility, not humiliation. Let us sign treaties of peace and use the shrapnel and shattered pieces of war to rebuild and restore our broken, bombed, sunken families, friendships, relationships and marriages. Today and together, let us not live in fear or shame, but look to our past to give us direction, protection and courage for our future.

Let today be a date which will live in dignity and unity in your life. And let the wars between us all be over.

Is Your Oil Worth the Toil?

If you have a family, ask yourself if you are taking care of them financially at the cost of nurturing them emotionally? I know you can do both, and sometimes you have to. But if you’re not also taking care of your own needs then you’re already starving your loved ones worse than you are by not putting food on the table. Yes, you can have a fulltime job and a family, but be careful to not let your family’s support go unnoticed or unreturned. Hearts are much harder to replace than occupations. And I promise you that the pay and benefits from a happy family are much better than any other “job” you could ever have.

What Purpose Propels You?

Remember that your greatest strength and ability to endure your schedule duels, and recharge when you’re weary and worn out, comes from having a powerful purpose. It will not come from just getting more sleep, more “me” time, or more play time. Those things will help you to survive, but not truly thrive, especially when the going gets rough and you don’t feel so tough. I know sometimes you have to sacrifice the things you want to do in order to survive, but if you don’t find a greater purpose for your life, something with more meaning than a time-clock and crowded cubicle, you might wake up one day and wonder where your life and your family disappeared to.

Don’t Live to Work.

Make a way to work so you can truly live and thrive, not just survive. Make tough choices and smart sacrifices, but don’t throw your dreams, or your family, on the altar of apathy in the name of surviving. They are too important to be the sacrifice and you are too talented to be at the mercy of a job that doesn’t also allow you to nurture yourself and your loved ones.

Too Tired to Retire.

Sure, you stayed out of debt and maybe your retirement will get you through a few years on your rear, but did you really live and enjoy life? Did you really make memories worth remembering? But does your retirement account look better than your photo album? If you don’t know, or forgot, now is the time to find out what makes you happy and pursue your passions in life.

Meant For Far More Than 9 to 5.

At the end of life, you will discover (for better or for worse) that you really were meant for more than a 9 to 5 life. That doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference and have a good life working 9 to 5, but don’t think for one second that your time and life aren’t worth more. Don’t let the things that matter the most in your life, or things (people) that should matter the most, be put at the mercy of those things that matter the least, no matter what your wages or debts are.

Your heart, health and time are irreplaceable.

Spend your breaths and seconds wisely, or you’ll go emotionally bankrupt and be burnt out before you know it and your family will no longer be able to enjoy you, or your time. They may even forget who you are, other than a person with a paycheck. Today, listen to the right voices, make the right choices and remember that no matter how long you’ve been burning the midnight oil, your life is worth so much more then just living to work. Go live your life!

If you don’t fight for your future and your life who will…the time-clock?
