Some may wonder why this chapter was so crucial to incorporate into the sacred record (Book of Mormon) to be preserved for thousands of years. It was not by chance, but choice, that these six verses were saved for our day and time. Let’s go see what wisdom encouragement they have in store for our individual lives!
Lehi’s Legacy
(v1) Before we get into the two records (sets of plates), we should address this beginning verse. It’s amazing to me that Lehi was able to “see, and hear and speak” all these inspired things “as he dwelt in a tent.” [See: Content in a Tent - July 2, 2025]. And once again we are told that he spoke “a great many more things” but they weren’t able to be recorded. I get that writing on plates is more difficult than a computer or voice recorder. But as one who loves reading the scriptures, I want to learn more about their experiences and how to apply them to my life. Nevertheless, I am content with the content the Lord has seen fit to entrust with us at this time and knowing that as we live it more fully we shall receive more inspired words and direction at a later time.
It is imperative that we each leave a more complete record of our lives and learnings as to help guide and guard our posterity through the increasing wickedness in this world!
The Larger Plates (Secular History)
(v2,4) Nephi, like his father, knew the value of continuing his father’s record and did so accordingly upon the Large Plates. Plus, Nephi new first hand (and first heart) how important writing and preserving records were to the Lord with all he had to endure and go (grow) through in obtaining the Brass Plates. Thus, as commanded, Nephi recorded “the reign of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people.” in these Large Plates.
The Large Plates contained important parts of their history (rulers, battles) that would continue the lineage of the people and hopefully help them to live better lives, also.
The Small Plates (Sacred History)
(v3) However, little did Nephi realize at this time that Lord would not only have him continue create the historical record, but also command him to create an even more holy and specifically spiritual record “the more part of the ministry” contained in the Small Plates. Also interesting, not to be confusing, both records were named “The Plates of Nephi.” Thus, while they were distinguished physically by size, their divine designation was vastly different in how they would bless our lives today.
We will discover another “special purpose” for creating the Small Plates that was more inspired than even Nephi knew at that time! (Hint: The 116 lost pages)
Personalized Penmanship
Also interesting that Nephi names both sets of plates after himself. This is not an ego thing, or just checking a bookkeeping box. He is personalizing them as to create a more diligent and devoted sense of urgency and accountability in every word. He is not only taking full accountability for what he records, but saying to each of us, that the record is correct, uncorrupted and received directly from the Lord to his heart and hands to yours.
When you put your name on something, it’s not just about ownership, or craftsmanship, it’s a testimony of your stewardship for the sacred words (works) you are entrusted to accomplish.
Christ’s Contingency Plan
(v5, 6) Sometimes we are asked, and even commanded, by the Lord to do things we may not understand at the time. We may not get a full explanation for the inspiration, receive every detail and direction, or even complete closure when the deed is completed. Nevertheless, we trust that the Lord “knoweth all things from the beginning” and not only has a “wise purpose” for His proposals, but that He “prepareth a way to accomplish all His works” and “He hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words” and will help you like Nephi to, “go and do” faithfully and successfully.
Thus, you can trust the Lord that there is always a reason for every season in your life and you can have faith and not commit treason and still accomplish the works which He has called and commanded you to do. In doing so, you are not only trusting that the reason will be revealed, to you (or your posterity), but regardless, you do your best to fulfill your divine duties.
As you go forward in faith in all that you do for the Lord today, know that you will also be blessed to be provided for and protected as you seek to accomplish those works which He has created, called, commanded and qualified you to do. You are not alone no matter what season you in. You are not alone whether you are in the wilderness, the valley, or the mountaintop.
